Frequency Plate

from £15.00

Frequency Plates are a collection of ceramics with patterns generated by sound waves.

In 1874, Ernst Chladni discovered that by sprinkling sand on a metal plate and striking it with a violin bow vibrant patterns emerge. The sand is bounced around in areas of vibration, and trapped in areas where standing waves form. 150 years later, Chladni patterns are still enjoyed in science demonstrations and YouTube videos.

We loved the magical aesthetics of these patterns and wanted to preserve them in permanent form. After we create the patterns with a metal plate and a speaker, we transfer them onto clay and mould them into plates. Each plate has the frequency with which it was vibrated inscribed on the back.

The plates come in three different sizes and are made from stoneware and porcelain.
