Chladni Bookend Workshop

Cymatics is the science of studying waves created by sound. When materials are vibrated at different frequencies with a speaker, they resonate and create fascinating patterns.

In May 2019 we ran a month long after school club at Store Store in Coal Drops Yard, teaching  students about Chladni patterns, mould making and casting. We experimented by resonating different metal plates and observed how the patterns change depending on the frequencies played by the speaker. We then captured the moment when the pattern happens by casting on top of it with Jesmonite, “freezing” it into position.

We created bookends made from Jesmonite with vibrant Chladni patterns engrained on their surfaces. All the student outcomes are available to buy at Store Store. Royalties from the sales go to the students or a cause of their choice.
